When it comes to choosing the best protein powder, we know it can be tricky! Especially if you're looking to try something new or a different protein brand. That's why we've written a review of our top 4 protein brands - so you can find out all the essential information and make the best commitment.

1.      VEGAN PRANA PROTEIN REVIEW

What is Prana Plant Protein?

Prana Power Plant Protein is plant-based protein blend that's ideal for vegans and those who avoid dairy.

Why We Love This Product

Plant based protein powders can often struggle to meet all the needs that a dairy based protein can. The Prana Power Protein is designed to meet all your protein demands & more. This powder mixes a blend of plant protein powders including pea, brown rice protein and sacha inchi. This gives the product a great amino acid content. It’s also fortified with the non-essential amino acids L-Arginine, L-Leucine and L-Glutamine so you get everything you need.

We love that this shake has a huge 32g of protein and is super clean - making it perfect for recovery.

Ingredients & Nutrition

Per Serving: 156 Calories, 32g of Protein, 0g of Fat, 6.2g of Carbs, 2.1g of Sugar.

PROS

A Good Quality Vegan Protein Blend. By combining pea, brown rice and sacha inchi protein, this blend has a great aminio acid profile. Not only that, but 1 serving provides a massive 31.8g of protein with only 0.1g of fat!

Prana Protein is also fortified with the amino acids L-Arginine, L-Leucine and L-Glutamine. Just to make it extra functional and optimal for recovery.

Added Digestive Enzymes. Papain and bromelain in this shake can help aid the digestibility of the protein and absorption in the gut.

It's Organic, and Free From Dairy, Soy, Gluten and Preservatives. Perfect for avoiding bloating and dairy related IBS symptoms.

IT MAY NOT SUIT YOU IF

You're Extra Strict on Carbs or Need Dairy. For most people a little bit of natural sugar is not a big issue – in fact, post workout it's actually needed to maximise muscle recovery and protein absorption. But if you are super conscious about carbs and sugar, you might reconsider a vegan shake. It’s very common for vegan proteins to have a higher carb content than dairy based proteins. Its due to the source and being plant based!

Taste & Flavour

If you have tasted a lot of plant based and vegan protein, you’ll know they don’t always taste... well… great. In fact, many just seem to taste like the earth or soil! But not Prana! Oh NO! This shake really is one of the best tasting vegan proteins on the market. Salted caramel is their most popular flavour and speaking for ourselves – is pretty damn good!

Mixability & Texture

Because its plant based, we find this shake to mix up quite well and deliver a thick shake. For some people it might be too thick but you can easily add more water! We personally love the thicker shake texture.

We recommend mixing 1 scoop with 300mls of water post workout for building lean muscle and for vegetarians and vegans struggling to reach their protein intake.

Price Point

1Kg $69.95.

Vegan proteins can be overpriced but we think Prana ON is great value for money for a complete and amazing tasting vegan blend.

What Our Customers Think

“The best tasting vegan protein I’ve had in a long time! The salted caramel is super tasty and the thickness means I feel pretty full after”.

2.      RULE 1 PROTEIN REVIEW

What is The R1 Rule 1 Protein?

R1 is a first-class whey protein isolate shake that is often taken by those looking to aid recovery and build lean muscle mass.

Why We Love This Product

The blend its self is a great high-quality source of whey protein. It contains whey protein isolate and hydrolysate making it an excellent choice. Because of the first-class protein ingredients, the shake is naturally high in amino acids. It also contains zero fat and lactose, with only 1g of carbs!

Ingredients & Nutrition

Per Serving: 100 Calories, 25g of Protein, 0g of Fat, 1g of Carbs, 0g of Sugar.

PROS

Its High Quality. Containing a superior blend of whey protein isolate and hydrolysate means this shake delivers 25g of protein per scoop. The amino acid profile is decent, and carbs and fat are also minimal.

Zero Lactose & Fat. One serving is only 100cals which is great for watching a calorie deficit and it contains 0g of fat.

IT MAY NOT SUIT YOU IF

You Don’t Like Flavours. This great blend contains sweeteners to enhance taste and lecithin as a stabiliser. If artificial ingredients are a big no no for you, something like Prana ON may be a better choice for you! However the blend does taste great and provides a high quality protein content.

Taste & Flavour

The shake is deliciously sweet and tastes great!

Mixability & Texture

The mixability of the powder itself is good. You may find that due to being a protein isolate, it may be slightly thinner when mixed with water, if comparing to a whey concentrate. This means the shake might be better mixed with milk or less water.

Price Point

1.13kg $79.95, 2.27kg $134.95

The price point for R1 is a good value because the blend itself is a mix of higher quality whey isolate and hydro isolate. These proteins are often more expensive in comparison to whey concentrate.

What Our Customers Think

“Honestly hands down the best tasting protein, love Rule 1 they always do good flavours, R1 protein salted caramel is the best.”

“I love this protein. The best quality WPI I've had.”

3.      OPTIUM NUTRITION GOLD STANDARD WHEY REVIEW

What is ON Gold Standard Whey?

Gold Standard is Optimum Nutrition’s top and bestselling protein shake and to put it quite simply – their go to whey protein powder. This product is a simple whey blend containing both whey concentrate and isolate. For those of you who didn’t know already… whey isolate is a more refined and processed version of whey concentrate, with less fat/carbs and a higher quality protein content.

Why We Love This Product

We love this blend because its reliable! You know you’ll get a smooth, great tasting shake from Optimum Nutrition and the brand itself renowned. In terms of quality, we love this powder because the main ingredient of the blend is whey isolate.  We also love the additional glutamine that has been added to aid recovery.

Ingredients & Nutrition

Per Serving: 120 Calories, 24g of Protein, 1g of Fat, 3g of Carbs, 1g of Sugar.

PROS

A Protein Blend. The protein blend in Gold Standard consists of whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate and whey peptides.

High Protein & Aminos. Each scoop delivers 24g of protein per scoop with 4g of glutamine and 5.5g of bcaas.

Average Macros. The shake itself is only 120 kcals per scoop when mixed with water with 1g of fat and 4g of carbs.

IT MAY NOT SUIT YOU IF

You are avoiding Artificial Ingredients. Well for us we love the taste but ON GS uses both natural and artificial sweeteners including sucralose. Why is this good? Well if you’re not to fussy about sweeteners, the proof is in the pudding and the shake tastes great.

Soy lecithin. If you are anti soy, you may find that many powders on the market including ON may not tick your box. However, the amount in this product is for food functional purposes and a small amount - so you won’t see any hormonal effects. Soy lecithin is a common food additive that is often added to foods as an emulsifier and flavour protector. And in terms of allergens – soy lecithin doesn’t contain enough soy to provoke allergic reactions.

Flavour and Taste

This protein blend gives a nice creamy taste and texture and you're guaranteed to have a great tasting shake with ON Gold Standard.

Mixability & Texture

The shake overall mixes well when shaken in a blender bottle -you just need 300mls of water and 1 scoop! By comprising of different proteins this powder delivers a decent thickness and creamy taste, that can be made thicker very easily by mixing with milk or using less water.

4.      ATP SCIENCE NOWAY PROTEIN REVIEW

What is 100% NOWAY?

NOWAY is well… Not whey protein surprisingly! This protein blend is one of the most unique blends from a top brand and is a hydrogen collagen peptide protein. It's also our bestselling powder at Fit Nutrition!

Why We Love This Product

By being made of collagen protein, NOWAY is dairy free and so is unlikely to upset our tummies. It’s great if you are being strict with your macros and good for dieting. Not only that, but it’s a simple blend with minimal allergens and artificial ingredients – making it very clean!

Ingredients & Nutrition

Per Serving: 68 Calories, 16g of Protein, 0.1g of Fat, 0.6g of Carbs, 0.3g of Sugar.

PROS

Its Simple. Ingredients wise this is a simple powder made using hydrolysed collagen protein, natural flavouring, xanthan gum, coconut MCT and stevia.

No Artificial/Synthetics. That’s right by using stevia ATP have made some quick wins and developed a clean bean shake!

Its Low in Calories and High in Protein. Each scoop is only 18g with 68 calories and 16g of protein. So you get a good protein dose in each scoop. This means it’s great for dieting. For those of us who also believe in keto diets this shake has minimal carbs with only 0.56g per scoop and is also low in fat with just 0.09g.

No Dairy GMOs or Gluten. Yep if you struggle with lactose intolerance or need to beat the dairy bloat, this shake is dairy free! Plus, it’s got no GMOs or gluten so is overall gut friendly!

IT MAY NOT SUIT YOU IF

You Need More Calories & Weight Gain. Because this product is low in calories, it’s great for weight loss goals, but if your goal is to eat more and eat more calories this shake would need to have additives like peanut butter, fruit or oats etc.

You Need More Dairy and are Vegetarian. From a nutrition point of view there aren’t too many downsides to NOWAY. Being collagen, NOWAY is not vegetarian friendly so might not be for you if you are vegan or vegetarian!

Flavour & Taste

There are 3 flavour options including chocolate fudge, vanilla caramel and strawberry. You may not get the same creamy taste as a milk based protein but our customers love the taste!

Mixability & Texture

The texture of this blend is light, and the shake mixes well but can come out thin when mixed with water. Here at FIT Nutrition we like ATP's NOWAY for so many reasons and advise it best to be consumed as a snack replacement or way to increase protein intake vs a meal replacement.

We recommend this shake for meeting your protein macros on a calorie budget! Try mixing 1 scoop of NOWAY with water or milk/milk alternative in the day to get more protein in your diet.

Price Point

$70 per 1kg

At $70 per 1kg you'll be getting a great product at a great price!

What Our Customers Think

“This stuff is the best, it's been great and I've been seeing results, but also actually my nails have grown SO much, my skin looks great and my hair has grown too.”
